My Impressed Orca Story (4) ― Ran games to feed Seagulls

*All the information is originally researched and compiled by myself(SHIROBUTA) referring to KSW origin papers. Copyright 2011 SHIROBUTA All Rights Reserved. When you quote this, please let me know.

Here is the series of stories that attracted me to Orcas.

Seagulls watch the Orcas (Bingo, Stella, Ran) in the sub pool.
On their line of seagull sight, something was dropped on the pool side.

Orca family is circling the pool calmly.
One seagull jumped on the pool side and approached the object carefully.

Ran( born on February 25, 2006) noticed the seagull, and gradually close the gap while circling.

Ran (Photo: December 2010 at KSW)

 A seagull pecks the object.

Ran shortens the distance little by little.

Finally, Ran put her jaw on the pool side and spit up water.
 Seagull pecks something.
Repeating this behavior several times, ultimately seagull put her rostal between Ran’s tooth.

 I hold my breath.
My heart beated faster at the thought that Ran would attack seagull and eat up.

Ran is under control. Ran can be fed only in the given amount/schedule.
Seagulls are free. They can fly over the Pacific Ocean next to the aquarium to cath fishes or pick up insects to eat. They can also pick up Orcas feed in the bustle of the performance show or feeding time.

Nonetheless, Seagulls make it a rule to visit Ran’s pool in the afternoon.
And the strange activities took place between seagulls and Ran.

The fact is; Ran was playing by feeding the seagulls.

I was amazed with the Orcas smartness.
Ran kills her time, using her given feed.

My Impressed Orca Story (3) ― Lovey gave birth to Earth

Here is the series of stories that attracted me to Orcas.

Lovey was born to Bingo and Stella on January 11 1998 in Kamogawa Sea World. She is the 1st captive-born and survived calf in Japan.

(Lovey Photo: December 2010)

As illustrated in 『My Impressed Orca Story (1)』, Stella became the “successful” mother using her wild instinct(calling Oscar for help) and her relationship with human (the veterinary doctor and trainer/staff).

Lovey was grown up in the main pool, where her father Bingo/Thor and Oscar/Wolfe performed the show.
She imitated what her mother Stella did, when Stella returned on the stage.
Ultimately, Lovey started following the trainer sign even before she got the age of 1, and she made a spectacular debut in 1999.

When she was 3 year old, Lara was born to her parents. When she was 5, Sara was born.
While her youngest sister Ran was born head-first, Lovey helped her mother Stella as “aunty” biting the calf's head for its first breath.

When she became 9, she was detected to mate with Oscar, who used to make her rush for the first breath upon her birth.

On October 13 2008, her 1st delivery had began around 6:00am, that means the delivery might fall on the aquarium business hours.
They determined to call the visitors in the Orcas tank to show her delivery, while keeping the audience away from the pool.
Lovey gave birth to male calf, where Lara played the role of “aunty”. The calf was later named Earth by a poll.

Lovey had watched her mother raising her 3 sisters; Lara, Sara and Ran.
Lovey knew what the mother should do, even though it was her first delivery.
She changed her position so that Earth can easily take her breast.
She slowed down her speed on corners not to drop Earth from her breast.
She ate the feed while swimming like a marathon runner so that Earth can keep breastfed.
Her sister, Lara, swam closely with them, protecting Earth from the pool wall.

When Earth was around 6 months, people noticed the strange scene.
Lovey bit the feed and dropped it to Earth’s mouth. Earth learn the different taste of the feed.

 How smart are Orcas!!

Lovey’s mother, Stella, did not know how to deal with the calf, when she gave birth to it. People cannot blame her, since she was captured when she was around 2 or 3 without watching the childcare.
But Stella’s wild wisdom( to call Oscar for help) and human idea ( to stimulate her maternal affection) saved the calf. (Details were illustrated in “My Impressed Orca Story(1)”
Lovey’s mother, Stella, was getting “mother” while raising 4 calves, where Lovey also learned the childcare.

Orcas have unique ecology; they live in pod led by a mother, where females spend the whole life learning childcare and helping each other. The calves were raised by the mother as well as sisters/aunts.
That unique ecology was perfectly resumed in the aquarium by the young captive Orcas (Stella, Bingo, Oscar and Lovey) who had not experienced the childcare.

The success story of Stella family encourages me a lot; there is no “perfect mother ” from the beginning. Females can be “mother” through their errors and ideas, if only they are dedicated.

(*1)There existed the delivery case in 1982, but it was wild-born and the calf could not survice more than 6 days. Lovey is the 1st calf captive-born and survived in Japan.

My Impressed Orca Story(2)― The Realistic Acting of the Trainer

*All the information is originally researched and compiled by myself(SHIROBUTA) referring to KSW origin papers. Copyright 2011 SHIROBUTA All Rights Reserved. When you quote this, please let me know.

Here is the series of stories that attracted me to Orcas.

Kamogawa Sea World (KSW) opened on October 1, 1970.
The founding director of the aquarium; Teruo Tobayama, planned to call attracting animals that embellish the event.

Since 1964, Orcas were captivated in the aquariums; Seattle aquarium, Seaworld Florida and Vancouver aquarium. But little information was available regarding their ecology, food, care and so on.

Nonetheless, Tobayama had a strong passion to show Orcas for the visitors. When the import plan is not run as scheduled, Orcas pod were strayed in Tokyo Bay by accident. Tobayama chartered the helicopter to catch the pod in vain.

In September 4 1970, two eagerly-desired Orcas came in from USA; Jumbo and Chappy.
Those 2 Orcas were too smart to learn 11 water-works in 4 months, and impressed the audience of all ages.
Unfortunately, those 2 had passed away in 4 years. At that time, it was generally said even in the USA that the longest period of rearing Orcas in the aquarium would be 3 years at longest.

After their death, Tobayama hesitated to install another Orcas for a long time. He needs time to review the handling process of those 2 Orcas.
7 years had passed since their death.
On February 11 1980, 2 Orcas were imported from Iceland; King and Caren.
Tobayama told the 4 year career veterinary doctor to study on Orcas.

The first problem was the feed. Those Icelandic Orcas were fed with rare herring in Iceland.
In spite that they must be hungry after 30 hour flight from Iceland, they did not pay any interest to frozen mackerel. Mackerel has just fallen in the tank ignored.
Helplessly, the rearing staff collected the fresh fishes for them. King and Caren rushed to the fishes and enjoyed the taste.

In the aquarium, the feed has to be something that can be easily available with the stable price. Getting rare herring is considerably difficult in Japan. They had to resolve the problem.

One day, the veterinary doctor noticed the strange scene on the Orcas poolside. A rearing staff held stirring fishes in his arms, struggling hard not to drop the violent fishes into the pool. King and Caren were watching him with their eyes wide opened.
When one fish was dropped form his arm, King bite mackerel with delight. Caren also ate the mackerel. They ate them up.
After their meal, the veterinary doctor asked the rearing staff where he get the rare fishes.
He answered, “Can you really imagine that I got the rare fishes, you know?”

The truth was that he performed as if the frozen mackerel were live to stimulate thier appetite.
Since then, King and Caren started to adore frozen mackerel.

My Impressed Orca Story(1)― The bonds between Stella and Oscar

Here is the series of stories that attracted me to Orcas.

(Stella on the sub pool stage and Ran in the pool Photo:December 2010)

In Kamogawa Sea World (KSW), Stella’s delivery was coming soon. From the experience of Maggie’s miscarriage, it was known that the mother temperature has fallen prior to the delivery.

In Maggie’s cases, the calf could not survive. There are 3 barriers for a calf to pass; (1)breath itself, (2) follow the mother(3)get the milk from her.
In Maggie’s 1st delivery, the calf could not pass (2) barrier (March 3, 1995)
In Maggie’s 2nd delivery, the stillbirth ended up sadly with depriving Maggie life as well(October 7, 1997).

The veterinary doctor and raring staff had worked hard to study Maggie’s cases to produce the success result in the next chance. They had a rule; watching/caring the animals carefully, being perfectionist rather than efficiency seeker, thinking from the animal point of view.

They had not experienced Orca delivery in Japan at that time. Therefore, they determined to refer to Dolphin cases they had gone through many times in KSW. In the Dolphins cases, the mother and “aunty” female became restless if the male Orca is left in the same tank.
Thus, they determined to put Oscar(the male that Stella was captured with) and Bingo/Thor(the father-to-be male) in the sub tank. However, Stella and Oscar would not apart each other. So, they left Oscar in the main pool with Stella.

(Oscar Photo: December 2010)

In the early morning on January 11, 1998, the labor had started. Around 8:00am, the calf come out.
Stella paid no attention to the calf, even though the calf fell down to the bottom of the tank. The doctor and staff recollected what happened to Maggie and her calf.
When they were hopeless to what to do, Oscar come to the calf and bite its head lightly. The calf come to itself and swam up to the surface for its first breath.

There still remained the 2nd barrier; the calf had to follow the mother
Stella still paid no attention to the calf and swam with Oscar calmly as usual.
The doctor and staff determined to call Bingo/Thor from the sub pool to change the situation. Some worried that Bingo might harm the calf, but they believed that Stella’s maternal love would outbreak.
When the gate was opened, Bingo comes in vigorously. However, Bingo went back to the sub pool after circling the pool one time.
People cannot blame them. They(Bingo, Oscar, Stella) were captured when they were around 2 or 3, so they had scarcely seen calves nor experienced childcare.

The director of the aquarium made up his mind. He called one female trainer, who always played water-work with Stella in ideal harmony.
First, she tried to guide Stella to the calf in vain.
Then, she did what the director told her to do. She tried to deprive the calf from Stella to stimulate her maternal affection.
She swam hard to catch up with the calf. When she is about to touch the calf’s pectoral fin, something strikes her back. The whirlpool put her to the bottom of the tank. She swam desperately to the surface and found Stella swimming with the calf.
The doctor and staff were pleased with their good job.

1 day passed, and Stella gave 1st milk to the calf. 54 hours had passed since the delivery.

One day, when Stella built up childcare routine, that kidnap-attempt trainer entered the tank. Stella was accepted her as she used to be.

They were convinced that what "rules” they secured were correct.

Stella, since then, gave birth to 3 other female calves; Lara,Sara and Ran .

(Stella giving a kiss to Ran, and Bingo seeign them Photo: December 2010)

The 4th calf Ran was born head-first (February 25, 2006), where Lovey and Lara played the “aunty”. Lovey is the one who was born in the above-mentioned story. Lovey accompanied Stella during the long labor. Once the calf was fallen to the bottom of the tank, Lovey bit its head as she used to be done by Oscar.
When the calf took the 1st breath, 4 Orcas were swimming together; Lala, the calf, Stella and Lovey. Lovey was swimming close to the wall to protect the calf from it.

(Lala and Lovey perfoming the Jump Photo:December 2010)

Lovey herself became mother in 2008, that would be illustrated some time soon in my essay here.
